Uploading Files to the Web Server
Coastside Net provides these instructions for how to upload your Web pages to our Web server so your pages can be accessed by the Internet. If you would like more information on how to create HTML pages, you can find excellent information at W3C.
Below you will find simple instructions for FTP (file transfer protocol). File transfer protocol is nothing more than a fancy name for copying a file from one computer to another. The directory system on the computer you are uploading to works the exact same way as your computer at home.
After you have created your Web page, save it locally on your computer as an HTML file. When you attempt to upload the file to the Coastside Net server, your FTP program will prompt you to fill in some information. (Need an FTP program? Click here to go to our Applications and Resources page.) Here is what is required to upload your web page to the Coastside Net Web server:

Also used to login to the Web server to upload your Web files. Check the 'Save Password' option if you want the program to remember your password so you don't have to type it in again. |
Basic instructions for WS_FTP or Fetch:
- Start the program.
- In the first window, create a new profile for Coastside Net, or use an existing session.
- The Host Name is 'ftp.coastside.net,' followed by your username and password.
- Click 'OK' to log into the FTP server.
- Under 'Local System,' locate the file(s) you want to upload. Always call the first page of your Home Page 'index.html'.
- The opposite window will read 'Remote System.' This directory is named '/home/username,' where you will upload your file(s).
- Highlight the file(s) on the Local System, and choose the arrow to move it to the Remote System. With Fetch, you will use the "PUT" command.
- You can check out your home page by visiting http://www.coastside.net/username, with 'username' being your Coastside Net user ID. If you recieve an error message, double check your information and try again.
Basic instructions for Netscape Communicator:
Once you have created your home page, you may upload the page with Netscape Composer. Start Netscape Composer then choose "Publish" from the button bar. A popup window will appear, asking for the following information:
- "Page Title" - name your page. This will appear at the very top of the browser when viewed on the Internet.
- "HTML File Name" - name the first page of your site 'index.html.' Name the others as you referenced them as links.
- "HTTP of FTP location to publish to" - use 'ftp://ftp.coastside.net/home/username,' with username being your Coastside Net user ID or the directory you want to publish to.
- "Username" and "Password" - these are your Coastside Net username and password.
- Choose the radio button to 'Include files associated with this page.'
- Click on 'OK' to upload the pages to our server.
- To check out your page, point your browser to 'http://www.coastside.net/username,' with username being your Coastside Net user ID.
